Defense contractors in Afghanistan vastly outnumber U.S. troops

The U.S. invasion of Afghanistan began 15 years ago. To this day, we have more than 8,000 troops stationed there, according to a report by the Congressional Research Service. Perhaps more interesting even than the number of troops stationed in the rugged, mountainous nation is the number of Defense Department contractors there.

According to the report, military contractors outnumber troops by a 3 to 1 margin. The ratio has widened in recent years, though the actual numbers of both contractors and troops continue to slowly erode.

Back in 2012, there were about 88,000 service members stationed in war-torn Afghanistan, a figure topped easily by the more than 117,000 defense contractors. According to the research by the Congressional Research Service, roughly 23 percent of the contractors were supplemental security workers. More than 70 percent of the contractors were foreign nationals.

The recent figures from the first part of 2016 show that the U.S. military employs almost 29,000 contractors in Afghanistan. About two-thirds of the contractors are foreign nationals. About 12,000 contractors are paid to do logistics and maintenance, about 1,000 are translators, approximately 1,700 are construction workers and about 2,200 are support professionals on bases.

Like our men and women in uniform, defense contractors face not only daily risks of violence and injury, but also the possibility that they will not survive and return to their loved ones.

For those contractors who suffer injury, you have rights protected by the Defense Base Act. A skilled attorney can help you fight for the compensation you deserve for medical care and wage replacement.

If you have any questions about the Defense Base Act and how this can affect you or a loved one, please contact the Barnes Law Firm at 713-652-4002 for a confidential consultation.
